Well, you don't see one of these very often!
Mayfair, so named as I found a monopoly £50 note under his saddle, is a beautiful, early, extra carved J. Collinson & Sons, measuring 42" (107 cm) to his highest point. With a stand length of 54" (137 cm) and width of 18" (46 cm)
It's hard to date him precisely as there is currently not very much information on these early horses, We know that the company started trading in 1836 and continued right up until the 1990's with the later horses being much more crudely carved and painted. However, even with his extra carving and original glass eyes, his stand has the more typical, straight posts, rather than turned posts. Therefore, I would guess that he was one of the last of his kind, before the designs were simplified. So my guess is that he would have been made in the 1920's or there abouts.
Mayfair sadly only had very small traces of his original paint under the later white gloss I found him with, so he has had a full repaint, although I have tried to replicate as closely as possible, how he would have looked, if he had been left in original condition.
His very tatty, original saddle seat was hidden underneath the red velvet one that he came with, which I used as a pattern and colour match although, I used pigskin suede rather than velvet.
I was also able to make a template of his saddle cloth from the original nail holes and have also matched the stud pattern to the original.
His tack is made from calfskin and has been aged to fit in with his overall look.
His mane and tail are real horsehair, a little shorter than I generally use, but this would have been more traditional for his age and also shows off that wonderful carving.
He is sold and ride-able, but due to his age and the rarity of the piece, I do feel he would be more suited to a collector than as a child's toy.
