Artist’s Edition Iberian Rocking Horse Sculpture.

I’m very excited to introduce my Iberian horse, and the first of my most realistic designs.

After a lifetime around horses and many years as an artist, I’ve had a strong desire to create something more lifelike than the rocking horse styles we usually see — a piece that captures real equine presence, not just a suggestion of a horse.

Proto is photographed here and is the first of what I class as my half-sized rocking horses — a decorative piece, approximately half the size of a Size 2 Lines horse.

He measures 22 to his highest point when mounted on his bows. The bows measure 3’ in length and 9” in width, making him a perfect size for a tabletop, shelf or console display.

These Artist’s Edition pieces begin as an original digital sculpture created by me, developed through my experience with real horses and my eye as an artist. Each horse is then individually hand-finished using traditional surface-prep and painting methods — sanded, gessoed, and painted as you would a fine wooden rocking horse.

He features:

  • Glass eyes

  • Real hair mane and tail

  • Many layers of Pan Pastels, sealed between coats for depth and softness

In Proto's case, I chose this rich rose grey, because it’s the colour I instantly think of when I picture the noble Andalusian. But almost any colour and pattern can be created either from the imagination or from your photos.

The bows are made from reclaimed or sustainably sourced hardwood, depending on your requirements and what is available. They are then either sealed with a durable hard wax oil, or painted to your taste.

Each horse will be signed by me, fitted with a brass name plaque, and supplied with a padded travel cover and wooden crate.
