Rancher is a plain carved G&J Lines horse, likely dating from around 1900-1920. Rancher earned his name when I discovered a tiny toy cactus tucked inside his body on arrival — it instantly brought to mind a child long ago playing cowboys with him.
When I bought him, he had been heavily overpainted in gloss. I had hoped to uncover his original finish, but sadly it was beyond saving. Fortunately, the woodwork was in excellent condition and only required a few small repairs. His stand, however, had suffered from woodworm and cut-down posts, so a complete replacement was needed.
Inspired by the cactus, I decided to give him a non traditional finish and bring him to life as a dark Buckskin Tobiano. His metallic tones shift beautifully in different lights, glowing warmly in the evenings under lamplight.
Although his original saddle block was loose when he came to me, I decided it was important to keep it. I’ve created a fitted western saddle for him, complete with a 3D-printed horn that slots securely into the original pommel holes. While I see my horses primarily as works of art, I know many still enjoy them as rideable pieces — this saddle gives a safe, firm seat, unlike the usual slip-prone removable saddles.
Rancher is a size 2 (small-medium), standing 38” (96 cm) at his highest point, with a 20” body length. His stand measures 44” (112 cm) long by 15” (38 cm) wide. For scale, the little girl pictured is 7 and quite tall for her age.
