Samuel is a very special little horse, made by JR Smith who traded in London from 1886 until 1916, Making this horse over 100 years old.

He's only a little fellow measuring 29" (74cm) to his highest point with a 17 1/2" (44.5cm) body length. His bows measure 54" (138 cm) long by 12" (30 cm) wide

He came to me overpainted with several layers of gloss, one leg was hanging off, but thankfully was not broken and just needed gluing back on. The bows were not as bad as they initially looked and luckily only one spindle and one quarter section needed replacing.

Most of his paintwork is original, his legs needed more extensive repainting, but I tried to keep as close to the original finish as possible. His tack is all new, but I have used calfskin with a deerskin seat for the saddle that has been hand dyed to give an aged look. I stripped the layers of gloss on his bows, but the red had stained the wood a lot, but as I wanted an aged look, I repainted in a very similar shade to the original green, but knocked it back, revealing hints of the red and the wood underneath. I think it gives a really pleasing finish.

He is now pretty solid, but due to his age and the rarity of the piece I would not recommend him for a child, he'd be much happier on display, for all to admire!

You are welcome to collect from my home in Gloucester, or I am happy to arrange a courier. UK mainland would be around £70 but please get in touch for a quote if you are outside of this area
