This is a very special little horse. A Wilson Silver Cross, made in England somewhere between the 1880's and 1920's
It took me some time to identify the original maker as so few of these exist, and quite different to the ones shown in the rocking horse bible "A Kiss of Rocking Horses". However a very similar horse turned up in an auction, in near original condition, with the Silver Cross logo on the stand, so I have based the paintwork and tack on this example, with the unusual and striking saddle cloth shape.
The handful of other horses found, although the same overall shape seem to has less detail in the facial carving, making this one, the most beautiful example I have seen.
He is petite in stature at only 33" (84cm) to his highest point, with a 17" body length. His stand measures 40" (102cm) long x 15" (38cm) wide
The tack is handmade by me from calfskin, with a deerskin saddle seat. He has vintage cow hair for a mane and tail, which would have been what was used originally and he retains his original glass eyes. The stand and its metalwork are also original to the horse.
Although the horse is newly restored, I have aged everything down, to give him the appearance of a horse that has been loved for 100 years, including a yellowed varnish patina and signs of wear consistent with his age.
I am based in Gloucestershire in the UK and viewing/collection is welcome.
